NASA selects six Arizona small businesses for awards

NASA awarded over 300 small businesses with funding for research and technology transfer. Six out of the 348 businesses hailed from Arizona – receiving a total of seven awards.

Over $43.5 million was distributed to businesses across the United States through the Small Business Innovation Research program (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) contracts. The funding supports projects that promise to benefit NASA’s mission and the economy.

Proposals were selected based on several factors including experience, feasibility, qualifications and facilities of the submitting of the organization. However, the primary factor was how the proposals would support aeronautics and benefit NASA’s future aviation missions.

Exploring new technologies

Four out of the six businesses are located in the valley. Temple-based Alphacore Inc. received STTR grant to develop a built-in self-test for battery systems, and Phoenix Analysis and Design Technologies will research high-performance materials that imitate biological structures. Both businesses will work with Arizona State University.

Tuscon’s AdValue Photonics Inc. received SBIR contract to develop a pulsed ultraviolet laser, while Tuscon’s Paragon Space Development Corp. received two contracts towards a flexible radiator to cool inflatable habitats – similar to the habitats in the International Space Station – and technology for separating condensates from the air.

The two remaining SBIR grants will develop a semiconductor that improves high-resolution spectrometry and an improved computer model for flight dynamics in Chandler and Scottsdale, Arizona. SBIR contracts will last six months and STTR contracts for 13 months.
